Lightening came to life

This weekend, back in West Texas, we had a couple thunderstorms blow through. If you have been following my blog for any amount of time, you could probably guess the first thing I did was grab my camera and tripod and head outside to brave the rain, thunder and lightening to get some pics. IMG_0874 My first couple had some focus issues but still made interesting pictures. IMG_0875

As you can tell, we live literally on the edge of town. Like the other side of the street is the city limits. So you can see the street lights for the streets just to the north of us.IMG_0886

Finally, once I got my focus problem fixed, I sat in wait and caught some AMAZING strikes of lightening.IMG_0891

Don’t worry, no photographers were harmed in the making of these pictures. I was out in the open while the storm was still far off, but as it moved closer I was under the porch shooting out. Photography is all about taking risks…but not being dumb.IMG_0893

These strikes were huge and bright, and I’m pretty sure they were hitting all over the north side of town.IMG_0895

Finally, I was already impressed with what I had gotten- by far 20 times better than other lightening pics I have taken- when THIS happened.

Bring on the storm season!

  1. Awesome! I’ve been really wanting to get some lightning shots..but living in Vermont with all the mountains, its pretty difficult to get a decent shot without being too close with that being side..sometimes its better to just take the risk. I’ve had a close call before with one bolt of lightning hitting a utility pole about 10 feet in front of me.

Sometimes I like to shoot 1080p video of the storm at night and pull a frame out..but its just not as good as doing an actual exposure. I just need some good weather…its been pretty lousy here in VT.

    Nice shots by the way!
